Hardship Licenses
A hardship license, or “Cinderella” license, is technically not a license, but rather an adjustment to the hours you are allowed to operate your motor vehicle on the license you already possess and enable you to keep up with school, work, medical treatments, or family obligations. Hardship licenses are available for several different types of suspensions, including DUI suspensions.
About hardship licenses
A hardship license will allow you to operate your motor vehicle for a twelve-hour period, seven days per week until your suspension is up. There are severe penalties for operating outside the hardship window, namely that you will lose your license and depending on the suspension you may face mandatory jail time.
Hardship licenses are by no means a forgone conclusion at the RMV. Several factors go into evaluating whether a candidate is appropriate for a hardship license. Such factors include the nature of the suspension, driving history, substance abuse history, open criminal matters, etc.
Note: If your suspension is due to a breath test refusal and your case is still pending, you will be denied a hardship license.
